In an unexpected turn of events, Alan Ibrahimagic took charge as the temporary head coach for the German basketball team during EuroBasket 2025. This change came about due to the health issues faced by Alex Mumbru, who had to step down from his position as head coach during the tournament.
Ibrahimagic, a veteran coach in German basketball, has a rich history in the sport. He worked alongside Gordon Herbert at Alba Berlin and later with the national team. Ibrahimagic's contributions to the junior teams of the German Basketball Federation have been highly praised by Herbert. In fact, Ibrahimagic did an incredible job, according to Herbert, and even won a silver medal with the U19 team just before EuroBasket.
However, Ibrahimagic's tenure as head coach was not without challenges. He missed Germany's surprise World Cup win due to personal reasons, and there have been rumours that he was not fully appreciated within the federation.
Herbert, who coaches the FC Bayern Munich basketball team, expressed delight at the German team's EuroBasket triumph. Interestingly, he did not consider himself part of the team's success, as he made the decision to leave last year. Despite this, he has stayed in touch with Mumbru during the EuroBasket tournament.
Herbert does not expect any immediate departures from the FC Bayern Munich team that won five European titles. He hopes the team returns with clear heads from EuroBasket, ready to continue their success in the upcoming season.
Meanwhile, Isaac Bonga, a member of the German basketball team, has a potential chance to join the NBA, according to Herbert. No new information about Bonga's future or that of other team members, such as Andreas Obst and Oscar da Silva, was provided.
As for Ibrahimagic, he has a long and varied coaching career. Before stepping up as head coach during EuroBasket, he was a youth and assistant coach at VfB Hermsdorf, IBBA Berlin, TuS Lichterfelde, Alba Berlin, and Ludwigsburg. He has coached various German youth national teams and served as assistant coach for the senior national team before his temporary promotion.
Despite the challenges faced during EuroBasket, Ibrahimagic's performance as head coach has undoubtedly left a lasting impression. Whether he will continue in this role or return to his previous position remains to be seen.
