German Military Helicopter Crash in Grimma, Saxony: Search and Rescue Operation Underway

A tragic incident occurred in Grimma, Saxony, on Tuesday, as a German military EC135 helicopter crashed in the Mulde River during a training flight, resulting in a search and rescue operation.

The helicopter crash site, located in the Bahren district, has attracted over 200 rescue personnel, including police divers, motorboats, and a K-9 unit. An oil barrier and a boom have been deployed to contain any kerosene leakage from the wreckage.

Mayor Tino Kießig, who is also a firefighter on the scene, described the operation as "major." In a move to maintain transparency, the mayor announced an information blackout regarding the accident.

Two crew members were retrieved dead in the evening on the day of the crash. The search for the missing crew member continues, with the support of over 100 emergency responders.

Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius visited the crash site, confirming the recovered bodies and affirming that the search for the missing crew member continues. He also emphasised that all circumstances of the crash are under thorough investigation.

Air Force Chief, Holger Neumann, called the incident a "black day for the air force." The partial lifting of the military cordon around the Bahren district has occurred, allowing for a more focused search and rescue operation.

The incident has drawn widespread attention, with the German government expressing its condolences and offering support to the families of the crew members. The search and rescue operation continues, with the hope of a positive outcome.
