Hélène Cixous Wins 2025 Formentor Literary Prize
French writer, playwright, and philosopher Hélène Cixous has been named the winner of the 2025 Formentor Literary Prize. The award ceremony will take place at the Teatro Real in Madrid on Wednesday. Cixous, born in Oran, Algeria, in 1937, has made significant contributions to European culture with her unique style and intellectual breadth.
Cixous' literary career began in 1969 with her first novel, 'Inside', which won the prestigious Medicis Prize. She continued to make waves in academia, being appointed professor of English Literature at Paris 8 University in the same year. In 1974, she founded the Centre d'Etudes Féminines et de Genre, the first doctoral program in women's studies in Europe.
Following her award, the Formentor Literary Conversations will be held from October 2 to 5 in Aranjuez, Madrid. The European Publishers' Colloquium will also discuss the future of literary publishing in Europe during the event. Cixous has maintained close intellectual and personal relationships with notable authors such as Maurice Blanchot and Jacques Derrida throughout her career.
Hélène Cixous' receipt of the Formentor Literary Prize recognizes her enduring impact on European literature and culture. Her pioneering work in women's studies and her unique literary style have left an indelible mark on the literary landscape.
