Held Hamas captive seeks military reinstatement

Edan Alexander, a dual citizen of Israel and the United States, has declared his intent to return to military service with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), following his release from captivity in the Gaza Strip.

Alexander was among over 250 people abducted during an attack by Hamas and other extremists on October 7, 2023. His captivity was marked by 'days of struggle, pain, and separation from his family,' as he described in a speech at an event hosted by the private US organization FIDF, which supports Israeli soldiers.

Alexander's time as a Hamas captive in the dark tunnels under the coastal strip was, he said, 'the hardest days of my life.' During his captivity, he was distributed across several neighborhoods in the city of Gaza to halt the Israeli offensive, according to reports.

Despite his harrowing ordeal, Alexander affirmed that his story doesn't end with survival, but continues with service. He urged that while he is free, many others are still in captivity in the Gaza Strip. It is estimated that approximately 20 captives are still alive in Israel.

Alexander was released in May as part of an agreement between Hamas and the US, without Israeli involvement. However, the details of the agreement remain undisclosed.

In conclusion, Alexander ended his speech with 'Until victory,' expressing his determination to serve his country once again. His bravery and resilience serve as an inspiration to many, reminding us that freedom is never truly won, but continuously fought for.
