Bagger Damages Pipeline - 30,000 Households Without Heat - Heidelberg’s 30,000 homes freeze after construction accident severs heating pipeline

Around 30,000 households in Heidelberg were left without district heating after an excavator damaged a key transport pipeline on Monday. The nearby town of Schwetzingen was also affected by the disruption. Authorities have not yet named the operator responsible for the construction incident.

The incident occurred when construction machinery struck the pipeline, cutting off the heat supply. As residual warmth faded, heating systems in homes began to cool down. Residents were urged to keep doors and windows closed to retain warmth where possible.

The pipeline was restored by the end of Monday, allowing district heating to resume. Residents in Heidelberg and Schwetzingen were able to regain normal heating and hot water supply. The incident highlighted the vulnerability of local infrastructure to construction accidents.
