Heidel Endorses Siewert for Mainz Coaching Position

In a surprising turn of events, interim coach Jan Siewert has emerged as a potential long-term candidate for FSV Mainz 05. Sporting director Christian Heidel, speaking before the RB Leipzig match, stated, "Jan is one of the candidates. We don't need to get to know him again." The 41-year-old currently manages Mainz's U23 side and has stepped in following Bo Svensson's departure.

Mainz entered the matchday at the bottom of the table and had exited the DFB Cup against Hertha BSC earlier in the week. Heidel addressed the switch swiftly, "We've discussed Jan openly, we didn't have time to ponder it." Siewert had previously taken over the Mainz squad for a brief spell in December 2020 before Svensson's arrival.

Heidel expressed his admiration for Svensson, "I can only tip my hat to Bo. It was a collective decision." The Dane, having played for FSV as a professional for many years, enjoys widespread adoration among the fans. Heidel shared his perspective on the change of coaches, "I don't need another dose of that."

Siewert's prospects at Mainz have been accelerated by the club's recent administrative decisions, including the signing of Jan Siewert on a permanent contract last season, which has led to some criticism[1][3]. However, the latest news reports no recent developments regarding Siewert's contract status following this update.
