Heidebäckerei Meyer expands as Schaefer’s Bakery exits REWE supermarkets
A long-standing bakery chain, Heidebäckerei Meyer, is stepping into new markets as another, Schaefer’s Bakery, withdraws from local supermarkets. Heidebäckerei Meyer, a family-run business with over a century of history, will soon supply fresh baked goods to REWE stores in Schladen and Wolfenbüttel. The change follows the departure of Schaefer’s Bakery from several REWE locations in the region. Schaefer’s Bakery, owned by Edeka Minden, has ended its leases at multiple REWE supermarkets. The closures affect branches in Wolfenbüttel, Helmstedt and Schladen. No further shutdowns are expected from the chain. REWE is now filling the empty spaces near checkout areas with new suppliers. In Helmstedt, Meisterbäckerei Steinecke will take over the bakery section. Meanwhile, Heidebäckerei Meyer—known for blending tradition with sustainability—will provide products to the Schladen and Wolfenbüttel stores. The company, with over 70 branches, has built a reputation for quality over more than 100 years. The supermarket is also redesigning the vacant areas to better fit the new bakery offerings. Specific details about Heidebäckerei Meyer’s arrival, however, remain unconfirmed in public sources. The shift means customers in Schladen and Wolfenbüttel will soon find Heidebäckerei Meyer’s products on REWE shelves. Helmstedt shoppers, on the other hand, will see Meisterbäckerei Steinecke’s goods instead. REWE’s adjustments to the checkout zones aim to keep fresh bakery options available despite the recent closures.
