News Article: Progress Made Against Mount Underwood Wildfire in British Columbia
The Mount Underwood wildfire in British Columbia, which has been burning for several weeks, has seen significant progress as of late. According to reports, the fire has been downgraded and is now being held, meaning it is no longer expected to spread beyond its current size of about 35 square kilometres.
This development comes after more than 30-40 millimetres of rainfall over the past week helped suppress the fire's aggressive growth. Approximately 168 firefighters, along with 19 heavy equipment units, have been actively working on containment, focusing especially on the north and northwest edges closer to Port Alberni.
The fire initially forced evacuations and a local state of emergency, but most evacuation orders have now been lifted. However, the road between Port Alberni and Bamfield remains closed, partly due to access and safety issues related to the fire area. Power restoration efforts are underway, with BC Hydro aiming to restore electricity to affected communities days earlier than initially projected (around August 23-24).
Despite the helpful rain, officials warn that heavy rainfall could cause slope instability, rockfalls, and danger trees, so residents must avoid evacuation zones due to these new hazards. The ongoing risk necessitates caution for residents in the area.
Meanwhile, other parts of the country are facing their own challenges. In the Gaspé Peninsula region of Quebec, a senior died in a beach landslide. Authorities in Pakistan are defending their response to the recent floods, which have resulted in 274 deaths.
