Heavy Rain and Flooding in Mumbai: IMD Issues Red Alert

Mumbai and its suburbs are bracing for heavy rain and thunderstorms, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the region. Areas such as Borivali, Santacruz, Powai, Mulund, Chembur, Worli, Colaba, Alibag, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan are expected to experience intense downpours exceeding 15 mm per hour, causing significant waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and delays in local train services.

The heavy rain and flooding situation in Mumbai has been persistent since mid-August 2025, with daily life severely impacted. Schools have been closed, traffic jams are common, and there have been disruptions in flights and trains. The Mithi river has also swollen, leading to entry of floodwater into certain localities like Ambedkar Nagar BKC.

The IMD forecasts indicate that the heavy rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding areas, including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, will gradually reduce by Thursday and Friday, August 21-22, 2025. However, the current warnings remain significant due to ongoing intense rainfall in Mumbai and parts of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra.

In addition to Mumbai, a red alert has been issued for very heavy rain and local flooding in Raigad. Strong winds and thunderstorms are likely in Raigad, Thane, and Palghar today. People in the city are advised to carry umbrellas, avoid low-lying areas, and plan for delays due to waterlogging.

The southwest monsoon has arrived early in Maharashtra, the earliest in 35 years. The low-pressure system causing the rain is expected to move eastward and slowly weaken, but not before bringing more showers to parts of Maharashtra, including Konkan and Goa, until May 27. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as rough weather is expected to continue over the next few days.

In summary, Mumbai and its suburbs are under a red alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms through at least August 20-21, 2025. Severe waterlogging and flooding are expected in low-lying areas, and people are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe. The rain is expected to reduce by Thursday and Friday, but vigilance is advised during this period.

Due to the red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather-forecasting indicates that heavy rain and flooding will continue in Mumbai and its suburbs until at least August 20-21, 2025. In addition to Mumbai, a red alert has been issued for very heavy rain and local flooding in Raigad, where strong winds and thunderstorms are also expected.
