Title: Hedgehogs in Peril: Thuringia's Brown-Breasted Hedgehogs on the Brink

In an unusual turn of events, hedgehogs have been chosen as Germany's Animal of the Year 2024, despite the majority of these small creatures hibernating during this period. However, their selection as Germany's 'Animal of Honor' tags a serious concern about their population decline in Thuringia.

The Brown-Breasted Hedgehog Plight

Although estimating the exact population of the brown-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is an arduous task for Thuringia's Ministry of Nature Conservation and Energy, this is an issue of increasing concern. Since 2021, the brown-breasted hedgehog has been listed on Thuringia's early warning list for endangered species due to notable population declines.

As per the Ministry, should persisting hazards continue to negatively impact the population, the hedgehog may find itself listed as 'endangered,' leading to its inclusion on the Red List.

Causes of Hedgehog Population Decrease

The ministry attributes the hedgehog's population decline to the encroachment on habitats in both urban and rural areas and the grave peril they face from road traffic accidents.

Moreover, in their efforts to secure a thriving future for hedgehogs in Germany, donors to the German Wildlife Foundation have recognized the hedgehog's plight, selecting it as the Animal of the Year 2024. The red fox and squirrel were also contenders for this title.

Hedgehogs Adapting to Urban Spaces

According to the German Wildlife Foundation, loss of natural habitats has compelled hedgehogs to seek refuge in gardens and green spaces within residential areas. Their estimated numbers in these environments have increased tenfold compared to their rural counterparts.

Regrettably, in these modern living spaces, gravel gardens, sealed surfaces, automobiles, and robotic mowers pose additional challenges for these small creatures.

Encouraging Public Awareness and Support

In an effort to draw public attention to the situation of animals like the brown-breasted hedgehog and the vital need for wildlife conservation, the German Wildlife Foundation and the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety advocate that people actively participate in protecting and preserving Germany's diverse animal population.

By raising awareness and generating public interest, these organizations urge individuals to support conservation efforts and assist in safeguarding species on the decline, such as the brown-breasted hedgehog.

Stay tuned for more enlightening insights on this topic, and stay engaged in supporting the preservation of our wild animal populace.
