Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer, left an indelible mark on the sport of boxing, with seven of his heavyweight world championship fights taking place in New York City. His career was marked by iconic bouts, dramatic comebacks, and controversial decisions.

In 1963, Ali's professional boxing journey reached a significant milestone when he defeated Doug Jones in a hotly-contested decision at Madison Square Garden, securing his first heavyweight championship. This victory set the stage for a series of legendary fights in the Big Apple.

One of Ali's most famous bouts in New York City was 'The Fight of the Century' against Joe Frazier in 1971. Frazier's WBC and WBA titles were on the line, and despite Ali's best efforts, he lost the fight via a unanimous decision, marking the first blemish on his professional record.

Ali's first heavyweight championship defense in the city was against Zora Folley at the Garden in 1967. He secured a victory via TKO in the seventh round, but his victory was short-lived. His declared status as a conscientious objector led to being stripped of his boxing license in New York, as well as his WBC and WBA championship crowns.

Ali returned to New York City for the first time since his suspension was overturned in federal court in 1970, where he faced Oscar Bonavena. In a 15-round affair, Ali secured the vacant NABF heavyweight crown via TKO in the 15th round.

Another significant fight for Ali in New York City was his bout against Floyd Patterson in 1972. Patterson, 37 years old and in financial trouble, agreed to the bout to earn one more payday. Ali won the fight via unanimous decision, marking the final fight of Patterson's career.

Ali's victory over Shavers in 1977 earned him the world heavyweight championship for a record third time. This bout, which took place in Miami, is notable for Ali's use of his famous rope-a-dope strategy to outlast Shavers.

Ali's third fight against Ken Norton is considered by many to be among the most disputed in boxing history. The bout, which took place in 1976, went the distance, with Ali securing the decision.

Ali's final New York City bout was against Floyd Patterson in 1972, where he won via unanimous decision. His career, however, took a turn for the worse in the late 70s, with Ali losing three of his final four bouts.

Despite these losses, Ali's legacy in boxing remains unmatched. His charisma, determination, and skill in the ring continue to inspire generations of boxers. His fights in New York City, in particular, will always be remembered as some of the most iconic in the history of the sport.
