Heavy storms and rainfall expected to hit Nigeria - NiMet issues weather alert

Get ready, Nigeria! The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has dropped a bomb of a forecast, predicting thunderstorms and rainfall galore across most parts of the country from Wednesday through Friday.

In their oh-so-serious weather outlook unveiled on Tuesday in Abuja, NiMet has issued a stern warning, urging Nigerians to buckle up for some possible extreme weather conditions, particularly in the northern, central, and southern regions.

So, what does this weather mishmash look like for Wednesday? NiMet predicts an early morning thunderstorm rollercoaster ride over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, and Adamawa States. But wait, there's more! Later in the day, they've promised a thunderstorm and rain double feature in no less than Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi States.

Meanwhile, in the North Central, areas like Benue, Kwara, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Nasarawa will get an early morning thunderstorm warm-up, with rain returning later in the day for FCT, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau.

In the South, it's gonna be a cloudy morning with rain chances in Ondo, Ekiti, and Edo, followed by some isolated thunderstorm and rain fun time in Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ogun, Oyo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Rivers later in the day.

For Thursday, NiMet is forecasting an early morning thunderstorm fiesta in Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, and Taraba, with rain stretching later to Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kano, Gombe, and Bauchi.

In the North Central, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT may experience an early morning rain shower, followed by a thunderstorm after-party in Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau.

The South will kick thingsoff with showers in Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, followed by a region-wide thunderstorm rave-up by afternoon.

By Friday, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba are expected to experience an early morning thunderstorm karaoke night, while Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Kaduna, and Bauchi will continue the rain dance later in the day.

In the North Central, NiMet foresees cloud patches with sun bursts during the day and thunderstorms with rain in FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Niger. Kwara, Benue, and Kogi residents are in for some evening thunderstorm fun.

The South will remain cloudy with morning rain in Oyo, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, with a region-wide thunderstorm party likely later in the day.

NiMet advises citizens to keep their cool during this stormy period, warning that gusty winds may precede thunderstorms, especially in the North.

"Stay frosty, folks! Secure those flying objects, and stay away from the roads during heavy rains. And remember, unplug your appliances from the socket during storms," the agency advises.

Finally, NiMet warns against standing under tall trees during rumbles in the clouds and encourages airline operators to request airport-specific weather updates for flight planning.

So, remember:

  • Prepare for thunderstorms and rain in Nigeria from Wednesday through Friday.
  • Stay safe and secure flying objects to avoid collisions.
  • Avoid driving during heavy rains.
  • Unplug electrical appliances from sockets during storms.
  • Avoid standing under tall trees during thunderstorms.
  • Check local news or NiMet's website for state-specific forecasts.

In light of NiMet's forecast, Naija residents should brace themselves for possible extreme weather conditions, particularly in Abuja, the capital city. Meanwhile, we should anticipate thunderstorms and rainfall across most regions of Nigeria, starting from Wednesday to Friday.
