Numerous Accidents in Hesse Due to Icy Roads - Heavy snowfall triggers traffic chaos and accidents across German regions
Heavy aldo has caused widespread traffic chaos across Hesse and other German regions. Since early morning, icy roads have led to multiple accidents, with vehicles skidding off routes and blocking lanes. So far, only minor property damage has been reported, and no serious injuries have occurred.
The disruption began overnight as snow blanketed roads, leaving them treacherous for drivers. On the A3 motorway near Obertshausen, one car slid into a ditch due to the slippery conditions. A jackknifed truck also blocked the on-ramp toward Würzburg on the same motorway, causing delays.
Elsewhere, a vehicle in Steinau an der Straße veered off State Road L 3179 and landed in a ditch. On Federal Highway 448 near Lämmerspiel, strong winds toppled a road sign, adding to the hazards. Collisions were also recorded on Federal Highway 45 close to Rodgau, as well as minor incidents in Seligenstadt, Maintal, and Nidderau.
The problems extend beyond Hesse. At least six states—Bavaria/Franconia, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Thuringia, and Berlin/Brandenburg—have faced similar issues. Franconia, in particular, saw 20-30 cm of snow, leading to snow break damage and further travel complications.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as icy conditions persist. While no major injuries have been reported, the accidents have caused delays and minor damage. Drivers are being urged to exercise caution on affected routes.
