Bracing for Chill: Winter Hits Dalmatia with Cold Front (and Bura)
Heavy Snowfall Sweeps Dalmatia: Mosor Experiences Season's First Snowflakes, Biokovo Records 10 cm Depth
Stepping out in Dalmatia on Tuesday felt like diving headfirst into winter's icy embrace. With temperatures plummeting and the biting bura wind howling, even the heartiest of souls might have second thoughts about venturing outside.
Cloaked in the dreary cloud cover that had settled over Dalmatia since Tuesday, the weather mimicked a departing autumn, refusing to bid adieu until it had offered a relentless taste of what lay ahead. For those who braved the day, it was a chilly and unwelcome reminder that winter was here to stay.
Tuesday's weather provided further evidence that the region was in the grip of a cyclone, driving temperatures down and causing rainfall to drench southern regions and the islands. According to reports from Dalmacija Danas on November 27, 2018, the system had moved south into the Adriatic, lowering the temperature and intensifying the region's chill.
Metković and Vrgorac were hit hard, with over 30 liters of rain per square meter, while Hvar, Korčula, Pelješac, and the Dubrovnik region bore 10 to 20 liters.

But if rain was the day's volley, the bura wind proved to be the bitter counter-punch that left even the sturdiest easily winded. By nightfall, the wind grew stronger, reaching an eye-watering 100 km/h in some coastal areas. Gyre and gust, the bura snatched at coats and hats, and eyes watered as if in response to nature's own salted air.
The chill in the air was nothing compared to the mountainous regions, where the temperature dipped close to freezing. At Dinara, the mercury plunged to -5°C, while Saint Jure on Biokovo fell to a near-freezing -3°C. By midday, the ground was already blanketed with a thin layer of snow, reaching about 1300 meters above sea level.

As the last rays of the sun lazily lingered in the afternoon, the snow-capped peaks of Mosor beckoned enticingly. The mountain, well-acquainted with winter's dreams, welcomed its first snowfall of the season on some of its highest slopes. At Star Village Mosor, the thermometer dipped to a bracing 3.7°C by 5 pm, hinting that the nearby villages of Dubrava and Gornje Sitno might soon join the season's snowy dance.
As Wednesday dawned, the forecast promised a gradual stabilization, albeit with a strengthening bura wind poised to plunge the temperatures even lower. But for the intrepid dreamers in Dalmatia, the promise of a winter wonderland remained as beguiling and tantalizing as ever.
