Heavy snowfall in Solingen results in limitations on bus transport services
In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Solingen is facing unprecedented challenges as persistent winter weather conditions have caused significant disruptions to its public transportation system. The S1 and RE 47 train lines, connecting Düsseldorf and Solingen, have been particularly affected by these disruptions.
The S1 line is currently operating with replacement buses that will stop at all stations between Düsseldorf and Solingen. An express bus service, designated as RE 47, is running directly between Düsseldorf and Solingen without intermediate stops. These changes are a result of extensive construction work, including track, points, and overhead line repairs, which are ongoing from early May until December 2025. The current disruptions are expected to continue until at least mid-August.
The bus services in Solingen have been affected more than other modes of transportation, with several lines having to temporarily remove stops from their schedules. Line 683, for example, is currently shuttling between Krahenhöhe and GWP, while Line 695 is not serving the Schulstraße and Abteiweg stops. Line 689 service to Höhrath has been suspended, and Line 696 is currently unable to service the Gläser Straße stop.
The transportation authorities reported the disruptions on Thursday, advising commuters to buy their tickets before boarding as no sales are available on replacement buses. Unfortunately, there is no detailed information about disruptions specifically attributed solely to persistent winter weather beyond what affects these lines simultaneously with the construction works in the greater Wuppertal area.
Despite these challenges, the city of Solingen is working tirelessly to ensure minimal inconvenience to its residents and visitors. The disruptions have led to severe restrictions on some bus services, including the suspension of certain lines and shuttling services. However, the city's resilience and adaptability are evident as it navigates these difficulties, demonstrating a strong commitment to maintaining an efficient and reliable public transportation system.

[1] The ongoing weather-related disruptions on Solingen's public transportation system have led to the implementation of weather-forecasting measures to ensure optimal decisions are made for the future.
[2] Consequently, transport authorities are now considering weather-forecasting data in their plans for maintenance work and route planning to minimize disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions.
