Ice causes bus lines to be shut down in some areas - Heavy snow cripples Rhineland-Palatinate transport with delays and crashes

Heavy snow and icy conditions have disrupted transport across Rhineland-Palatinate. Bus services faced delays, cancellations, and standstills on 19 February 2026. Several accidents were also reported on major roads due to the severe weather.

The Mittelrhein transport authorities confirmed widespread issues across their network. Twelve bus routes suffered the worst delays, with passengers advised to use Deutsche Bahn trains or shared on-call taxis instead. Westerwaldbus also reported major setbacks as icy roads and snow slowed operations.

On the B9 in the Mainz-Bingen district, two separate accidents occurred overnight. One driver crashed into a fallen tree but escaped unharmed. Another vehicle was damaged after running over branches scattered by high winds. Both incidents were linked to the snow and strong gusts.

VRW Verkehrsbetrieb Rhein-Westerwald GmbH also halted services in some areas. Snowfall left buses unable to operate safely, leaving parts of the region without transport.

The extreme weather has forced transport providers to adjust schedules and warn passengers of ongoing risks. Alternative travel options remain available, but road conditions stay hazardous. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the snowfall persists.
