Heavy Rainfall Warnings Issued by IMD: More Than 10 Local Train Routes Suspended in Mumbai

In the bustling city of Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared all government and private schools and colleges closed due to ongoing heavy rains and a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This decision also applies to all government and semi-government offices, while private offices have been advised to allow employees to work from home to ensure safety [1][2][3][4].

The heavy rainfall, which began several days ago, has led to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and safety concerns. The BMC, acting as the District Disaster Management Authority, has been actively monitoring the situation and issuing directives to mitigate risks during this period of intense monsoon activity [1][3].

While some regions, such as Punjab and areas like Jammu and Uttarakhand, have declared holidays due to monsoon-related disruptions, Mumbai's closure status is specific to the heavy rainfall event in late August 2025 [5].

Meanwhile, an orange alert is in place in Mumbai, with moderate spells of rain predicted. This has led to travel advisories from airlines such as Air India, Akasa Air, and IndiGo, due to heavily waterlogged roads [6].

Normal functions on Mumbai's local trains resumed after 10 PM yesterday as water receded. However, over 15 routes have been cancelled due to the rains, affecting both the Harbour and Central lines, with tracks submerged underwater [7].

Elsewhere, schools are closed in Lonavala due to a high warning from the IMD. Tragically, there has been no official confirmation regarding the number of deaths due to heavy rainfall in Maharashtra, and rescue efforts are ongoing following a monorail accident near Mysore Colony in Chennai [8][9].

Despite the challenges, Mumbai University has rescheduled an exam that was originally scheduled for August 19 to August 23 [10]. The Indian Meteorological Department has also issued a red alert for the districts of Pune, Thane, and Raigad in Maharashtra [11].

As of August 28, the BMC has not extended the closure of government offices in Mumbai on August 20, nor has there been any official confirmation about schools and colleges reopening on that day [12][13]. Private office employees have been advised to continue working from home to avoid unnecessary travel.
