Heavy Monsoon Rainfall Expected Across India: IMD Issues Weather Alerts

India is bracing for heavy monsoon rainfall over the next week, according to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The department has issued a series of weather alerts and predictions for various regions of the country.

Northeast India and Adjoining Eastern States

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Northeast India and its adjoining states for the next seven days. Assam and Meghalaya are forecast to experience isolated extremely heavy showers on August 2. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also likely to receive isolated very heavy rainfall between August 2 and 4. Bihar is expected to have heavy rainfall on August 2 and 3.

South Peninsular India

Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Mahe from August 2 to 6. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning is expected at many places over Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Telangana in the next seven days. Strong surface winds reaching 40-50 kmph are also likely over this region during the next five days.

West India

Light to moderate rainfall at many or some places is likely over West India for the next six to seven days. However, an orange alert has been issued for 10 districts in Madhya Pradesh such as Gwalior, Bhind, Morena, Sheopur, Datia, Umaria, Dindori, Katni, Mandla, and Panna. These districts may receive 2.5 to 8 inches of rainfall within 24 hours starting from July 30. Heavy rainfall is also predicted in districts like Narmadapuram, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni, and Balaghat. Meanwhile, Indore, Ujjain divisions may see light showers, and Bhopal and Jabalpur are likely to remain dry at least on August 1.

Central & Southern Peninsular India

Rainfall activity is expected to be subdued during the next six to seven days.

Eastern Rajasthan and Western Madhya Pradesh

A significant reduction in rainfall is expected starting August 1, following recent heavy to very heavy rainfall recorded in these regions.

Temperature Trends

Markedly above normal maximum temperatures were noted at a few places around July 30.

The IMD has warned of intense rain spells over Gujarat, Marathwada, and the Saurashtra & Kutch regions in the coming days. A depression has formed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and is moving westward. Extremely heavy downpours are expected in Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, North Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and East & West MP.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Kerala & Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, North Interior Karnataka, Gujarat, Saurashtra-Kutch, and Marathwada. In Uttar Pradesh, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on July 26 and 28. Very heavy rainfall is expected in Marathwada. On July 28, Delhi will have generally cloudy skies with light rain, W to SE winds up to 20 kmph. In Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana, isolated heavy rainfall is expected from July 27-31. On July 27, Delhi will have generally cloudy skies with light rain, SW winds in the morning, NW by afternoon. Heavy rainfall with lightning is expected in Bihar. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Coastal Karnataka. In Northwest India, extremely heavy rainfall is expected over East Rajasthan from July 26-29. In Delhi, light rain and thunderstorms are expected through July 28, with temperatures slightly dipping from 38°C to 31°C by the end of the week.

The IMD has issued warnings urging heightened preparedness in various regions, particularly for flood-prone or hilly areas. In Northeast India, isolated very heavy rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura, especially around July 26-27.

These forecasts reflect ongoing monsoonal activity characterized by heavy rainfall concentrated primarily in northeast and adjoining eastern India, with localized heavy rain and thunderstorms in south peninsular India and moderate activity elsewhere. The IMD continues to monitor and update forecasts regularly.
