Heavy rainfall warning announced for various districts in Bihar; Orange alert issued signifying potential severe weather conditions.
Flood Threat Rises in Munger as Ganga Flows Near Danger Mark
The flood threat in the district of Munger, Bihar, has escalated as the Ganga River flows just 2 centimeters below the danger mark. This development has affected over two lakh people across thirty-three panchayats in six blocks of Munger, according to recent reports.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for all thirty-six districts in Bihar, including Patna, warning of winds of 40 kmph, thunderstorms, and lightning. An orange alert has been issued for West Champaran and Gopalganj districts, signifying the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall that could trigger flooding in low-lying areas.
Over the past 24 hours, several districts in Bihar have experienced heavy rainfall. Purnia's Bhavanpur recorded the highest precipitation at 126.2mm, followed by Rupoli in Purnia (96.8mm), Masaurhi in Patna (88.2mm), and Sonbarsa in Saharsa (77.2mm).
Other parts of North Bihar are expected to experience torrential rainfall on September 18. South Bihar is also likely to experience rain accompanied by strong winds and thunder on the same day.
The weather alerts in Bihar may bring much-needed relief from the humid conditions that have been prevalent in the region. Current conditions show temperatures ranging between 24°C-26°C with 95% humidity and winds from the southeast at 6 kmph.
In response to these weather conditions, the IMD has advised citizens to remain indoors during thunderstorms and to avoid standing under trees to reduce the risk of lightning strikes. Farmers are also urged to exercise caution while working in fields during this unstable weather period.
The Met Department has not specified the names of the chief meteorologists responsible for issuing the Orange and Yellow alerts for West Champaran and Gopalganj. However, their warnings underscore the urgent need for precautions and preparedness in the face of these challenging weather conditions.
As the situation in Munger continues to worsen, residents are advised to stay informed and heed the advice of local authorities. It is hoped that the much-needed relief from the recent spell of sultry weather will bring some respite to the affected areas in the coming days.
