Heavy Rain Alert for Southern South Korea Starting this Weekend

Starting this weekend, South Korea is bracing for heavy rain, particularly in the southern regions. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has issued a warning for South Jeolla Province and South Gyeongsang Province, where concentrated rainfall is expected to occur over the weekend.

The heavy rain is a result of a stationary front that is forecast to form along the southern parts of South Korea from Saturday. This front is created by the collision of warm, humid air from the southeast and dry air descending from the north.

From Aug. 11, rain is expected to focus on the southern parts of the country, with cities such as Gwangju observing up to 50 millimeters of hourly rainfall over two days. Up to 60 mm of accumulated rain may be observed in Daegu and other cities in North Gyeongsang Province, as well as North Jeolla Province and Jeju Island.

Intense rainfall may be observed in the North and South Jeolla provinces through early Sunday. The KMA anticipates up to 80 mm of rainfall to accumulate in Gwangju, Busan, Ulsan, and other cities in South Jeolla Province and South Gyeongsang Province on Saturday. Heavily hit regions in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province may accumulate up to 120 mm of rain on Saturday.

However, it is important to note that the precise areas of concentrated rainfall are prone to shifting due to changing meteorological situations. Furthermore, the strength and placement of the low-pressure system forming over the weekend remain uncertain, making it difficult to predict exact rainfall amounts and their impact.

Rain will cease to fall from Aug. 15 due to the North Pacific high-pressure system covering all of the Korean Peninsula. Following this, heat wave advisories are expected to be issued in most parts of the country from Aug. 15.

The shifting stationary front and the repeated formation of low-pressure systems near its axis closely resemble the tail-end behavior of Korea's monsoon season. The southern parts of South Korea, including Jeju Island, can expect rainfall from Saturday.

It is recommended to consult local meteorological agencies or updated forecasts for precise, current data regarding the heavy rain alert in South Korea.

  1. The heavy rain that is expected to hit South Korea starting from this weekend is related to the field of environmental science, particularly the study of weather patterns and climate systems.
  2. The shifting stationary front and the repeated formation of low-pressure systems near its axis in South Korea are topics of interest in the science of meteorology, specifically the study of the weather and atmosphere.
