Breaking News: Pune Basks in Rain, Yellow Alert in Effect for Next 48 Hours 🌧️💔

Heavy rainfall of 11.2 millimeters hits Pune city; rainfall in May 2023 being the second-highest since 2022

After the city and ghat areas received a much-needed dip in the mercury on Friday, May 9, the weather gods have not deemed it fit to call it quits just yet. The bonhomie of rainfall bellowed in parts of Pune has triggered a yellow alert by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Rainfall activity is expected in the city and neighbouring ghat areas for the next 48 hours, as suggested by S.D. Sanap, a seasoned meteorologist at IMD Pune.

With the skies painting a vivid picture of temperamental weather, Shivajinagar recorded the second-highest rainfall (11.2 mm) since 2022 on Friday, trailing behind a long-forgotten downpour in May 2024 (40.6 mm). Meanwhile, neighbourhoods such as Katraj, Kondhwa, Wakad, Aundh, Baner, and central Pune experienced good showers. Hadapsar flaunted a 'wet' 17.5 mm, and Pashan was reported to have received a splashy 17 mm. Rajgurunagar named the roll of honour for highest rainfall, with 31.5 mm on Friday.

The meteorological dance is being orchestrated by multiple weather systems that are currently active across the country. A western disturbance is seen as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan and its vicinity, while another fresh western disturbance, a trough, unfurls in middle tropospheric westerlies, scattered along longitude 55°E to the north of latitude 27°N. An upper air cyclonic circulation has also formed over northeast Rajasthan and its surroundings, along with a trough that travels from the east-central Arabian Sea to the cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan and its environs. A north-south trough traverses north interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar, sweeping over Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu in lower tropospheric levels. In essence, the swirling vortex of various weather systems steers the rain-drenched forecast for Maharashtra.

As Pune claps back after welcoming the rain, fresh air embraces the city's breathable lungs. Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) data by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) reveals that the city's air quality index (AQI) soared to a 'satisfactory' 74. Although most monitoring stations in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad reported AQI levels below 100, Hadapsar (104), MIT-Kothrud (135), and Karve Road (233) touted the highest AQI. In Karve Nagar, air pollution levels fluctuated, marking 'poor' air quality conditions throughout the day.
