Heavy rainfall leads to fatal landslides in Coastal Karnataka, tragically claiming life of a 6-year-old girl

In coastal Karnataka, heavy rains have resulted in numerous landslides and collapses, causing significant disruptions. Particularly hard-hit is Ullal taluk, where a six-year-old girl, Fatima Naeem, tragically lost her life when a compound wall collapsed on her house in Deralakatte, Mangaluru in the early hours of Friday. Further residential areas in Mangaluru have experienced landslides, leaving several residents trapped beneath debris.

On Thursday, Montepadavu, near Mangaluru, saw five individuals buried under a collapsed hillside in a separate incident. Rescue efforts so far have managed to retrieve two of the survivors, with efforts ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining trapped individuals.

In a separate incident in Belagavi's Gokak town on May 26, a three-year-old girl, Krithika, died after a house wall collapsed on her during heavy rains. Her mother Reshma and younger sister Khushi also sustained injuries but are now reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities have sounded red alerts for vulnerable areas across the coastal belt and advised residents to avoid travel and stay away from riverbanks and unstable slopes, as intermittent rains persist. Local authorities and disaster response teams are actively coordinating rescue and relief operations to tackle the ongoing crisis.

Elsewhere in the state, the relentless downpour has triggered similar incidents. Heavy rainfall has caused landslides in the Dakshina Kannada district, as per officials. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall, flash floods, landslides, and strong winds in vulnerable areas.
