Heavy rainfall in the morning causes flooding across various zones in Tainan

In a remarkable weather event, the township of Dawu in Taitung County, Taiwan, experienced its highest recorded monthly rainfall in 86 years. According to data from the Central Weather Administration (CWA), a staggering 1,851.5 millimeters of rain fell in July 2025.

This unprecedented rainfall surpassed the previous July record, set in 1939 when the weather station in Dawu was established. The CWA Director for Taitung Weather Station, Jan Li-chun, confirmed this historic milestone.

The heavy rain was not limited to Dawu alone. Yunlin and Chiayi counties, as well as the mountainous regions of Nantou and Taitung, also experienced extremely heavy rain, as reported by the CWA.

The CWA categorizes heavy rainfall as more than 80mm in a day or 40mm in an hour, while extremely heavy rain refers to more than 200mm in a day or 100mm in three hours. Torrential rainfall, according to the CWA, exceeds 350mm in 24 hours or 200mm in three hours.

The persistent downpours were attributed to strong southwesterly seasonal winds, which the CWA expects to continue through today. These winds have been causing short but intense downpours across the nation.

Other weather stations in Taitung County also reported high rainfall last month. The Taitung Weather Station in Taitung City recorded 879.5mm, while the Chenggong (成功) Weather Station recorded an impressive 979mm.

This nationwide heavy rainfall was the highest recorded monthly rainfall last month, with typhoons and seasonal southwesterly winds the greatest influence, Jan said.

In response to the heavy rainfall, schools and government offices in Tainan, Kaohsiung, Chiayi County, and parts of Pingtung County will be closed today. Independent meteorologist Daniel Wu predicts that the heavy rainfall is likely to persist throughout tomorrow.
