The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) is currently managing flood relief and waterlogging during heavy monsoon rains in the region. The corporation has taken several key measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.

Relocation of Residents

PMC has proactively relocated over 400 residents from flood-prone areas such as Kalamboli, Kharghar, Kamothe, and Panvel to temporary shelters set up in schools and community centres. These shelters include Kolivada School, Urdu School, Sports Complex, and Buddha Vihar.

Round-the-clock Operation of Pumps

To prevent and reduce waterlogging, PMC operates water pumps continuously in affected localities, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone zones.

School and College Closures

In response to severe flooding and safety concerns, schools and colleges have been closed in Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and Palghar on Wednesday, August 20.

Real-time Monitoring and Coordination

The municipal authorities monitor the situation closely through integrated command and control centres, allowing timely response to emerging flood situations and coordination of relief efforts.

Public Advisories and Preparedness

Officials have urged residents to remain calm, stay informed through official channels, and follow safety advisories. The administration declares readiness and mobilizes necessary departments to act quickly during monsoon emergencies.

Challenges and Ongoing Work

Additional details highlight challenges in surrounding areas from water runoff and blocked drains impacting Panvel and Navi Mumbai, emphasizing the need for continued flood control and drainage improvements. Drainage work is being carried out in several areas of Panvel, including Kalamboli Circle, Kharghar Gaothan, Panvel city, Kamothe, and Kalamboli. JCB and jetting machines are being deployed to clear drains and remove blockages in Panvel.

Traffic Delays and Alerts

Heavy rain has caused waterlogging on the Sion-Panvel Highway service road from Vashi to Panvel, leading to traffic delays. A red alert has been issued for Raigad district on August 20. Commissioner Chitale has directed ward officers to keep diesel and electric pumps running continuously.

Assurance and Instructions

The administration has assured that it is fully prepared to handle the situation. Commissioner Chitale also directed that the water level of Gadhi River in Panvel be monitored closely. Deputy Commissioner Ghodke issued instructions for fumigation to prevent vector-borne diseases. The civic body has appealed to citizens to remain cautious during heavy rains. All emergency response systems have been kept on standby by the authorities.

Contrary to fake messages, there is no holiday declared in Mumbai schools on Wednesday, August 20.

In summary, PMC’s flood relief strategy includes evacuation and sheltering of affected populations, continuous operation of water pumps to manage waterlogging, school closures for safety, and close real-time monitoring with coordinated emergency responses. The corporation is working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens during these challenging times.
