Heavy Rains Cause Flooding in Mexico City Metro, Affecting Metro Users

Heavy rains hit Mexico City on September 16, 2025, leading to flooding that impacted users of Line 1 of the Metro. The most significant flooding was reported on Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza near the Metro Zaragoza station, where the water reached over 30 centimeters in height.

Photographs of the floods, taken by our website and by local resident Francisco Rodriguez, show the extent of the water covering the road and obstructing the exit of users from the Metro station. The floods occurred near the height of the station, causing significant disruption to commuters.

The Mexico City Civil Protection Agency had activated a triple warning for rain and hail in the afternoon, covering the districts of Iztapalapa, Venustiano Carranza, Iztacalco, and Tlalpan. The rains caused impacts in these boroughs, but no new colonies in Iztapalapa or Tlahuac were reported to have been affected.

Additionally, flooding was reported at the Huichapan station of the Light Rail. However, there were no reported incidents of sinkhole enlargement in the Renovación neighborhood in Iztapalapa, despite separate headlines suggesting potential concerns in this area.

A double alert was activated for strong rains and hail in 14 Mexico City boroughs, but no new demarcations were added to the alert on September 16, 2025. No new alerts were activated for rain and hail in the afternoon or strong rains and hail in the remaining 14 boroughs of the city.

Despite the efforts of the Civil Protection Agency to manage the situation, the heavy rains continued to cause havoc in the eastern part of the capital. The floods on Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza, on September 16, 2025, were just one example of the impacts of the severe weather on that day.
