Heavy rainfall causes temporary shutdown of SRT operations in South Korea's southern region
Central and southern South Korea have experienced heavy rainfall in mid-July 2025, causing widespread disruption to rail services across several major lines, including Honam, Gyeongjeon, and Gyeongbu.
The Honam Line has seen major disruptions to SRT and KTX services, particularly south of Gwangju Songjeong to Mokpo. The Gyeongjeon Line has experienced a complete suspension of KTX/SRT and regular services between Dongdaegu and Jinju. The Gyeongbu Line has seen regular train services suspended between Seoul–Daejeon and Dongdaegu–Busan, although high-speed rail services have remained largely unaffected.
The Janghang, Seohae, and Chungbuk lines have also been affected, with regular train services suspended. The suspensions are due to flooding, landslides, and safety concerns caused by the heavy rains.
Korail, the state-run Korea Railroad Corp., has temporarily operated some Gyeongbu Line services on a single track to maintain limited operation, but delays have been widespread due to reduced capacity. Authorities have raised the emergency response level to the highest (Level 3), issued landslide warnings, and closed numerous roads, underpasses, and mountain trails.
Beyond rail, authorities have closed 54 riverbank roads, 27 underpasses, 119 riverside parking lots, and 393 low-lying bridges, reflecting the severity of the flooding. Heavy rain warnings remain in effect for Gwangju, Busan, South Jeolla, and South Gyeongsang, with rain advisories and landslide warnings issued across 25 other locations nationwide.
Travelers are advised to check real-time updates via Korail’s official channels before departure, as the situation remains dynamic and subject to weather conditions. SRT Train No. 384 on the Gyeongjeon Line has been completely suspended, and the suspensions affect rail services in the southern part of the country.
