Heavy Rain in Penang Causes Seven Tree Fall Incidents, Blocking Major Routes

Heavy rain and strong winds in Penang early on October 22 caused seven separate incidents of trees falling across roads, blocking major routes and causing significant traffic disruption. Emergency calls were received between 6.00am and 8.00am.

Jalan Tun Sardon towards Balik Pulau was completely blocked by a large fallen tree, stranding road users. Fire and Rescue teams were swiftly dispatched to carry out cutting and clean-up operations at the affected locations, which included Jalan Paya Terubong, Jalan Bukit Lama in Balik Pulau, Jalan Bukit Sardon, Taman Lip, Jalan Padang Benggali in Teluk Air Tawar, and near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Balik Pulau.

Despite the chaos, no casualties or fatalities were reported. The incidents, however, led to substantial traffic congestion in the affected areas until the roads were cleared.

The Penang Fire and Rescue Department, led by Assistant Director John Sagun Francis, worked diligently to clear the roads and restore normal traffic flow. Motorists are advised to exercise caution during heavy rain and strong winds.
