Heavy Monsoon Rainfall Triggers Landslides in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada District

Heavy monsoon rainfall has resulted in multiple tragedies in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district, with at least seven lives lost due to landslides, house collapses, and vehicle accidents. The situation remains critical, with ongoing rescue operations and evacuations in progress.

In the hard-hit Derala Katte area, a house once belonged to Kanthappa Poojary collapsed due to a hillside giving way, trapping five of his family members. Officials confirmed one woman, Prema Poojary (60), perished on the spot. Rescue operations are underway to rescue the other four trapped family members, with efforts nearing completion, as stated by B Harshavardhan, the sub-divisional magistrate.

In another incident in Kanakere, a minor girl lost her life after a compound wall behind the residence of Naushad caved in due to the relentless rain.

Rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to the affected locations since early Friday. Compensation of Rs 5 lakh each has been promised to the families of the victims, as announced by authorities.

In the face of the continuing rainfall and risks of landslides, schools and Anganwadis in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have been ordered closed for the day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates further heavy rainfall and sustained winds in coastal Karnataka, increasing the chance of flash flooding over several watersheds.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and preparing for potential further impacts, as homes in some areas have already been inundated with water. The rising Nethravathi River has necessitated evacuations from low-lying areas, with the river currently near the danger mark. Efforts continue to assess the damage, pinpoint vulnerable areas, and mobilize resources to tackle the escalating crisis.

  1. The government promises compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the victims in the ongoing Karnataka disaster.
  2. Amidst the heavy monsoon rainfall, schools and Anganwadis in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are ordered closed for the day to ensure safety.
  3. In addition to the landslides and house collapses, vehicle accidents have also claimed lives in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district.
  4. As landslides and flooding continue to affect the region, politics and policy-and-legislation discussions may arise regarding disaster relief and prevention measures.
  5. In crime-and-justice reports, incidents of car-accidents and fires might increase during periods of intense rainfall and general-news sources will likely cover the aftermath of these tragedies.
  6. War-and-conflicts might not directly affect Karnataka's monsoon crisis, but political tensions, migration, and the need for appropriate policy and legislation could parallelistically intensify due to the disaster situation.
