Monday marks the arrival of autumn, as the autumn equinox takes place. However, the seasonal change will be accompanied by a mix of weather conditions across Britain and Ireland.

A deepening area of low pressure is set to move across the region this weekend, bringing with it heavy rain, strong winds, and even the possibility of thunderstorms. The exact track of the low-pressure system is uncertain, but further weather warnings may be issued as confidence improves.

On Friday, many areas will be dry with some sunshine, but the wind will pick up, with gales likely, especially at the coast. As the high-pressure system moves away, the climate will become cooler, and the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD) will issue further weather warnings for the period Sunday to Monday.

Heavy rain is expected across central parts of Britain and the south of Ireland, with the east of Northern Ireland set to receive 20mm to 40mm of rain quite widely, and up to 80mm in some locations. Southern Scotland, northern England, and the north and west of Wales may experience up to 100mm of rain.

Thunderstorms are a risk across South East England, and the Met Office has issued two yellow warnings of heavy rain for Saturday through to early Sunday. The south of England will become warmer and very humid, with a high of 27C (81F) possible in South East England.

However, the further weather warnings for the period Sunday to Monday indicate that it will turn colder from the North, with daytime temperatures widely below average on Sunday. Much drier and calmer conditions are likely for the start of the astronomical autumn.

High pressure is expected to settle things down early next week, bringing an end to the mixed weather conditions that will characterise the start of autumn.
