Heavy Rain Causes Chaos in Ibiza and Formentera, Injuring Four
Heavy rain and flooding have caused chaos in Ibiza and Formentera, with four people injured in a rockslide at a hotel and classes suspended island-wide. The storm, which began on Tuesday, has led to power outages and rescues by firefighters.
The torrential rain, which lasted from 12:30 to 13:00, dumped over 230 liters per square meter in some areas. The deluge triggered a rockslide at a hotel, trapping four people who were lightly injured. Two others were seriously hurt in falls, including an elderly person who fell into a manhole while crossing the street.
Civil Protection sent a mass alert to mobile phones, warning of the high flood risk. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) advised caution due to possible floods and sudden river level rises. Both islands activated a red alert, leading to the deployment of the Military Emergency Unit (UME). Classes were suspended in all educational centers on Wednesday, affecting students at all levels, including evening shifts.
Despite the severe weather, no fatalities were reported, and the alert was downgraded to orange from 16:00 onwards. The situation is now under control, with assistance provided to those affected. Authorities urge continued caution as the storm's impact continues to be felt in the islands.
