Heavy rain-affected regions in South Jeolla are now classified as disaster zones, as per the declaration made by Lee.

In a move to aid the affected residents, President Lee Jae Myung has designated Muan and Hampyeong counties in Southwestern South Korea as special disaster zones. The designation was made on Thursday, following heavy rains that occurred last month, causing significant damage in the designated areas.

The designation as a special disaster zone was made due to the heavy rains and resulting damage, and it applies to six towns in both counties. The affected areas include towns such as Boseong, Yeongam, and Jangheung in Muan County, and Hampyeong County's towns of Namwon, Gangjin, and Haenam.

The designation aims to help residents in the affected areas return to their daily lives as soon as possible. As part of the measures, public utility fees for affected residents will be reduced. Additionally, extra support includes deferring tax payments.

The relevant ministries have been urged to promptly finalize recovery plans for Muan and Hampyeong counties. The designation as a special disaster zone also allows for additional government funding for disaster recovery.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung made the announcement in a written briefing to the press. The designation of Muan and Hampyeong counties as special disaster zones comes after the heavy rainfall impacts in these counties, which are located in South Jeolla Province, around mid-September 2025.

This designation is not the first of its kind, as the South Korean government has previously designated other areas as disaster zones to provide necessary aid and support during difficult times. The hope is that this designation will help the residents of Muan and Hampyeong counties rebuild their lives and communities as quickly as possible.
