In the early hours of Thursday, a heavy fog blanketed Highway 23 in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, causing two separate multi-vehicle crashes that resulted in serious and life-threatening injuries.

The first crash occurred near the intersection of Highway 23 and Sunset Road when a 79-year-old driver attempted to cross Highway 23 from Sunset Road, but the oncoming eastbound traffic could not see the vehicle due to the fog. This illegal U-turn resulted in a chain-reaction collision involving nine vehicles.

Shortly after, another six-vehicle crash occurred west of the first scene, bringing the total vehicle count to 15.

Jackie Zais, who works at Moraine Builders, was the witness to the crash scene. She emphasized the importance of using headlights in foggy and rainy conditions, stating that she encountered vehicles without headlights on during her drive.

The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office reported that the crashes occurred on Highway 23, a main road in the county. They are actively investigating and reconstructing the crash scenes to understand more details and possibly improve safety measures.

In such foggy conditions, it is crucial to avoid driving if possible. If driving is necessary, reduce speed significantly, use low-beam headlights or fog lights rather than high beams, maintain a greater following distance, avoid sudden maneuvers, pay close attention to road signs and traffic conditions, and use road markings as a guide when visibility is poor.

Such precautions are critical to prevent accidents in fog conditions similar to those on Highway 23 in Sheboygan County. The Wisconsin State Patrol is actively investigating and reconstructing the crash scenes to understand more details and possibly improve safety measures.
