Heavy downpours result in loss of 17 lives nationwide
In a series of unfortunate events, heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc across several provinces in Egypt, leading to numerous casualties, extensive property damage, and disruptions in various services.
The Upper Egyptian city of Aswan was one of the hardest hit, with electricity being cut for several hours. Moreover, more than 40 homes were destroyed, and the lives of 17 people were tragically lost, including a British tourist. A local woman was killed, three others were injured, and 57 high-tension electricity towers were also destroyed. Thunderstorms led to electricity blackouts in several cities.
Dozens of shops in the local market and entrances to hotels in the area were flooded, adding to the chaos. A 22-year-old woman drowned in torrents that fell on the Safaga-Quseir highway along the Red Sea coast.
The city of Sharm el-Sheikh was not left unscathed either. The entire city, including the Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital, experienced a power outage. Ceilings collapsed in the passenger lounges of the old Sharm el-Sheikh airport, slightly wounding an Italian tourist.
In North Sinai, six people were killed by torrential flooding. A military jeep carrying two Israeli officers was swept away by the downpour.
The seaport in Alexandria was temporarily closed due to bad weather conditions, and five primary roads, the Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport, and the Nuweiba seaport were closed due to the rains.
The Weather Forecast Authority predicts that rain will continue to fall until Wednesday over the north coast, the delta, and Cairo. The prediction includes heavy winds and low temperatures.
It is worth noting that the southern Sinai Peninsula experienced torrential rains for the first time since 1994.
