Heavy Downpours in Mumbai: BMC Pumping Stations Discharge Over 16.45 Billion Liters of Water in Four Days; Irla Tops with 3,768 Million Liters (VIDEO)
In the face of unprecedented heavy rainfall since August 16, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been working tirelessly to manage the floodwaters. Over the past four days, from August 16 to August 19, 2025, the city's six operational pumping stations have collectively pumped out an astonishing 16,451.55 million litres (1,645.155 crore litres) of rainwater[1][2][3].
This volume of water pumped is over twice the capacity of Tulsi Lake, which holds about 804.6 crore litres of water[1][2][4]. The six major pumping stations involved are Irla, Cleveland Bunder, Gazdarbandh, Lovegrove, Haji Ali, and Britannia, collectively operating 43 pumps, each capable of extracting 6,000 litres of water per second[1][2].
The pumps operated collectively for about 761 hours and 38 minutes over the four days[1][2]. Irla station alone removed over 3,768 million litres in this period[2]. Despite this massive pumping effort, Mumbai still faced some flooding due to rainfall intensity exceeding the stations' designed capacity[5].
On Tuesday, the BMC deployed 540 dewatering pumps across Mumbai, which removed 182.5 crore litres of water in just six hours. The combined pumping capacity of the Mumbai Metropolitan City pumping stations is approximately 2.58 lakh litres of water per second.
During the heavy rains, the city's streets were not the only places affected. Shocking images emerged on social media showing kids swimming outside Oberoi Mall in Goregaon amid heavy waterlogging during the Mumbai Rains[6].
As the city continues to battle the heavy rains, the BMC's efforts to manage the floodwaters remain crucial in maintaining the safety and well-being of Mumbai's residents.
