Moderate to Heavy Rainfall Predicted Over Three Days Across 14 States in Nigeria

Starting from Wednesday, May 28, 2025, and lasting through Friday, May 30, 2025, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast for moderate to heavy rainfall in 14 states across the country. The agency's warning highlights potential risks and advises residents to take precautions.

NiMet's forecast, detailed in its latest bulletin, estimates significant rainfall across Bayelsa, Rivers, parts of Delta, Ondo, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Imo, Abia, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kaduna, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Niger. Notably, strong winds may accompany these downpours, increasing the risk of flash flooding in various areas.

In light of the expected rainfall and potential flooding, NiMet encourages residents to remain vigilant and take necessary actions to ensure their safety. Key precautions include avoiding driving through surface runoff waters, which could hide dangerous undercurrents, and paying heed to slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility during the rainstorm.

To mitigate further risks, NiMet advises residents to stay informed about weather updates, secure their properties, and consider evacuation if residing in low-lying or flood-prone regions. Moreover, farmers might want to consider delaying planting or harvesting crops during heavy rain events.

Official forecasts emphasize the need for caution in regions prone to flooding and poor drainage systems. Unfortunately, this rainstorm may bring several risks, including flooding, agricultural impacts, and public safety concerns. Such effects can damage properties, disrupt livelihoods, threaten water and food security, and exacerbate health hazards like waterborne diseases.

By being informed and prepared, communities can better handle the challenges that heavy rainfall may present, ultimately protecting lives, properties, and livelihoods.

In Nigeria, as predicted by NiMet's weather forecast from May 28 to May 30, there may be heavy rainfall in states like Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Ondo, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Imo, Abia, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kaduna, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Niger. Given the possibility of flash flooding due to strong winds, residents in these states should stay vigilant and take precautions such as avoiding driving through surface runoff waters and exercising caution on slippery roads.
