Hamburg, the historic city, bore witness to a stormy start at this year's Ironman European Championships. The planned comm rollout for the 3.8 km swim course on the Binnen- and Außenalster was hit by a 45-minute delay, thanks to some uninvited cataclysmic guests in the form of severe thunderstorms.

The women's pro race, initially set for 6:15 AM, received the delay order at 7:00 AM. This abrupt postponement rippled throughout the racing schedule, impacting not only the 3,000 amateur triathletes but also the professionals.

German pro Mareike Guhl, among others, suffered a setback when she missed the start due to the delay. The race organizers, with the safety and well-being of the participants in mind, had made the tough call in light of the heavy rain and predicted electrical thunderstorms.

Despite these initial hurdles, the day took a turn for the better. The weather, after some uncertainty, showed a glimmer of hope as the sun eventually broke through the clouds. This uplifting transformation set the stage for primary competitor Laura Philipp to score an impressive victory with a record-breaking performance, a testament to the unwavering spirit and resolve of the athletes.

Meanwhile, in the world of sports, hockey fans eagerly await the next match, just as enthusiasts cheered for the triumph of Laura Philipp in the Hamburg City hockey stadium on a sunny day, after the initial thunderstorm.
