She has garnered significant support within Fine Gael, including backing from over 40 TDs, Senators, and MEPs, as well as the Regional Independents group allied with Fine Gael. Humphreys' political résumé, which includes portfolios such as Social Protection, Justice, and Rural and Community Development, is complemented by her unique personal background as a Presbyterian from Ulster with a strong Irish republican perspective, which she positions as an asset for unifying the country.

Sean Kelly, a Fine Gael MEP for Ireland South and former GAA President, also seeks the nomination and advocates for a democratic contest within the party. The nomination window reopened on 18 August and will close on 2 September. To secure the Fine Gael nomination, a candidate must receive the support of at least 20 parliamentary members, 25 party councillors, and 5 members of the party executive council. Given that both Humphreys and Kelly appear to have sufficient backing, Fine Gael is expected to hold an internal contest using an electoral college system weighted towards the parliamentary party to select its official nominee.

Heather Humphreys has taken a large lead in the battle for the party's nomination, with over 29 parliamentary party declarations, including ministers Peter Burke and Patrick O'Donovan, junior ministers Neale Richmond, Hildegarde Naughton, Colm Brophy, and Emer Higgins, among others. Sean Kelly has received support from Fine Gael TD Noel McCarthy, who highlighted Kelly's strong performance in the European election. Other notable supporters include Mark Duffy, a Fine Gael senator based in Mayo, who praised Humphreys' leadership and commitment to public service, and Joe Cooney, the Fine Gael TD for Clare, who declared his support for Sean Kelly.
