Heather Humphreys gains significant momentum in the Fine Gael presidential nomination competition, earning support from 40 fellow party members
Fine Gael's Presidential Election Contenders: Heather Humphreys and Sean Kelly
Heather Humphreys, a former minister, and Sean Kelly, a current member of the European Parliament, are both contenders for Fine Gael's nomination for the upcoming presidential election.
Heather Humphreys, known for her efforts to break down barriers and reach out with friendship, set out her campaign on Tuesday morning. She expressed her confidence in taking on the challenge for the presidential election, believing that the President can be a unifying force in the country.
Humphreys has garnered significant support, with more than 40 TDs, Senators, and MEPs backing her bid. Among her supporters are Senators Seán Kyne, Maria Byrne, Nikki Bradley, Joe O'Reilly, Mark Duffy, Gareth Scahill, PJ Murphy, Cathal Byrne, Manus Boyle, Linda Nelson Murray, and Noel O'Donovan. Additionally, she has the backing of several parliamentary party members, including Peter Burke, Helen McEntee, Patrick O'Donovan, Neale Richmond, Hildegarde Naughton, Colm Brophy, John Cummins, Emer Higgins, Emer Currie, John Paul O'Shea, David Maxwell, Jerry Buttimer, Paula Butterly, Grace Boland, Frank Feighan, Naoise O'Muirí, Catherine Callaghan, Alan Dillon, Keira Keogh, Maeve O'Connell, Pete Roche, James Geoghan, Colm Burke, John Clendennan, Micheal Carrigy, Barry Ward, and others.
Despite the apparent strong support for Humphreys, Sean Kelly insists he is still in the race for Fine Gael's nomination. He has the backing of six Fine Gael parliamentary party members, including Michael Murphy, Joe Cooney, Brian Brennan, Noel McCarthy, Garret Ahearn, and Michael Kennelly. Kelly played down speculation that Humphreys has the support of the majority of the parliamentary party, expressing skepticism about the level of support for her. He maintains that the level of support for Humphreys makes it appear impossible for him to get the 20 nominations he would require.
As the race for the Fine Gael nomination heats up, both contenders continue to campaign, hoping to secure the party's backing and ultimately, the presidency. At this point, no Fine Gael politicians have officially supported either Humphreys or Kelly in the presidential election they announced.
