Governor's seat in New Jersey up for grabs this year, as primary elections for potential candidates fiercely heat up, scheduled for next month.

Heated competition intensifies in New Jersey's gubernatorial primary race, positions at stake possibly influenced by former President Trump's political clout.

On June 10, New Jersey will hold its gubernatorial primaries, marking a potentially pivotal contest for both the state and the country at large, as many political experts suggest the outcome could foreshadow the sentiment of voters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

"This election serves as the first genuine test to gauge any potential Democratic backlash against the Trump administration," Daniel Bowen, a professor of political science at The College of New Jersey, explained in an interview with our site. "We've noticed a glimmer of motivated Democratic turnout in special elections. does that momentum persist in the fall in New Jersey?"

In addition to reflecting national sentiments, the race could also provide insight into the shifting loyalties of New Jersey voters and the potency of President Donald Trump's endorsement for Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli.

Bridget Callahan Harrison, chair of the Political Science and Law Department at Montclair State University, echoed this sentiment, stating, "not only could the race serve as a bellwether of voters' feelings towards President Trump and the midterms, but it could reveal both the realignment of partisan allegiances in the state and the strength of Trump's influence on the campaign."

Kamala Harris' slim victory in New Jersey highlights the competition's significance, having won the state by approximately 6 percentage points in 2024, compared to Biden's 16-point margin in 2020.

The contentious issues at stake include immigration enforcement and sanctuary cities, and the cost of housing and general affordability - matters that have galvanized Americans nationwide and will take center stage in the midterms as well.

A Crowded Democratic Field

Competing within the Democratic primary are six candidates gunning for succession of term-limited Governor Phil Murphy to maintain the governorship for the Democratic party.

Polls indicate that Representative Mikie Sherrill has taken an early lead in the race. Sherrill's political experience as a former Navy helicopter pilot and her established political network from previous runs for Congress favor her prospects, according to Harrison.

Representative Josh Gottheimer, a longtime congressman for New Jersey's 5th District, is another frontrunner. Gottheimer presents himself as a moderate and is eager to position himself as prepared to tackle Trump. He also emphasizes his ability to address the state's affordability issues.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, a former educator and city councilman, faces trespassing charges, which have since been dismissed, after joining members of Congress during a protest at a local Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center earlier this month.

Steve Fulop, elected mayor of Jersey City in 2013, boasts a background in investment banking and military service. As a mayor, he has overseen population growth, increased development, and municipal reforms.

Steve Sweeney, a union-backed former ironworker and former state Senate president for over a decade, spent two decades as a legislator in that chamber before losing to a Republican in 2021. Seeking to capitalize on his strong union support and legislative experience, Sweeney has declared his candidacy for governor.

Sean Spiller, president of the New Jersey Education Association and former mayor of Montclair, emphasizes his ability to tackle issues like affordable housing and childcare investments.

Republicans Harge Policy Alignment with Trump

Republicans hope to flip New Jersey's governorship red, viewing the margin between Trump and Harris in 2024 as indicative of the election's reachability. The New Jersey Republican Party recently encouraged voters in a fundraising email to "complete the job" and "flip New Jersey red, permanently."

Even with Ciattarelli currently appearing to stand as the race's front-runner, nothing is certain until the primary concludes. "Ciattarelli has so far seemed the race's frontrunner, though surely, in a primary, anything can happen," asserts Bowen.

In addition to Ciattarelli, candidates Bill Spadea, Jon Bramnick, Mario Kranjac, and Justin Barbera are also vying for the Republican nomination. Based on Ashley Koning, director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers University, Trump's endorsement could help encourage uncertain Republican voters to favor Ciattarelli. Spadea has shown a willingness to challenge both parties, while Bramnick has displayed less support for Trump. Kranjac and Barbera are running pro-Trump campaigns.

The 2025 gubernatorial race is expected to delve into key issues like economic growth, education, healthcare, environmental concerns, and public safety. Its outcome could impact the midterm elections, influence both parties' strategies, and shape their platforms for future elections.
