Heat Wave Expansion Alert by Aemet in Spain: "May persist until..."

Spain's Second Heatwave Extends Beyond Initial Projections

Spain is bracing for an extended period of high temperatures as the nation's State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has updated its forecast for the ongoing heatwave, which began on August 3, 2025.

Initially, Aemet predicted the heatwave would continue at least until Tuesday, August 12, with temperatures remaining abnormally high. However, the latest update indicates that the heatwave may last beyond this date.

According to the updated forecast, the heatwave is now expected to persist until at least Thursday, August 14, and potentially extend for several more days, even until the end of the week, particularly in the valleys of the Tajo, Guadiana, Guadalquivir, and Ebro.

The update contradicts an earlier prediction made by Aemet on Sunday, August 10. On Thursday, August 14, a new temperature rise is likely to begin, more pronounced in the northern half of the peninsula.

Aemet's Director, Daniel Domínguez, emphasised the uncertainty about the exact duration of the new temperature rise starting on Thursday. He urged the public to stay vigilant and follow the agency's updates for the most accurate information.

The heatwave has been a topic of concern since its onset, with Aemet issuing a special warning on August 6, stating the heatwave would continue "at least until Tuesday 12 August," with temperatures reaching 40 to 42°C in many regions. By August 8, Aemet forecasted the heatwave would persist until at least Wednesday, August 13, with widespread high temperatures around 36–40°C.

The gradual end of the heatwave was noted by August 18–19, with a cold front bringing storms and a marked temperature drop starting August 19–20, especially in northern and western regions. Some southern and southeastern areas may continue to experience high temperatures above 35°C beyond that date, but the overall heatwave conditions will subside.

For the latest updates on the heatwave, Aemet will provide a new report on Tuesday. The agency encourages the public to check its website for more detailed information on how the week could unfold in the peninsula.

Despite the initial weather forecast predicting the heatwave in Spain to end by August 12, Aemet's latest update suggests that the weather-forecasting agency now expects the heatwave to last at least until August 14, and possibly continue beyond that date, particularly in the valleys of the Tajo, Guadiana, Guadalquivir, and Ebro.

The extended period of high temperatures could have an impact on various forms of art, as many outdoor art events, performances, and exhibitions scheduled during these days may need to be either postponed or cancelled due to the weather conditions.
