Heatwave and Water Safety Concerns in Fresno, California

Fresno, California, is bracing for a late summer heatwave with temperatures predicted to reach up to 110°F. The scorching heat has raised concerns about water safety, as the risk of heat-related illnesses and accidents increases during outdoor activities.

According to the local forecast, the Valley is expected to experience triple-digit temperatures starting mid-week, with the hottest day forecasted for Thursday, August 7, with a high of 105 degrees. This extreme heat has resulted in increased risks such as heat stroke, dehydration, and fatigue, making water activities require heightened vigilance.

Four drownings have occurred in Fresno County this summer, including two kayakers. The most recent incident occurred in the Merced River on Thursday evening, with the victim wearing blue jeans and heavy boots, highlighting the need for proper attire when engaging in water activities during the heatwave.

Captain Rosenberg, a local authority, warned against fighting the current in local waterways, emphasizing that the conditions can be deceptive, with calm surfaces hiding swift currents. He advises swimming with the current to conserve energy. Another defense against waterways, as suggested by Captain Rosenberg, is to avoid them if one cannot swim.

Tony Botti, the spokesperson for the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, stated that the risks are higher for non-swimmers. He also encouraged the use of a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vest when engaging in water activities.

To mitigate these risks, Fresno County Sheriff's Deputies will conduct boat patrols on natural waterways, including Shaver and Pine Flat Lakes and the Kings River, throughout the summer.

In light of these concerns, it's crucial to prioritize hydration, supervision around water, and avoiding outdoor activity during peak heat hours to prevent heat-related illnesses and water accidents. Drinking plenty of water regularly, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours, using sun protection (hats, sunscreen), seeking air-conditioned or shaded environments, and never leaving vulnerable individuals or pets in vehicles are other recommended precautions during heatwaves.

Fresno is also taking longer-term measures to combat the heat, such as urban tree planting to provide shade and cooling. However, during this heatwave, immediate precautions focus primarily on hydration, cooling strategies, and water safety vigilance to reduce heat-related health emergencies and accidents.

Stay safe and cool, Fresno!
