Hearing Procedures Disrupted: Silvano Aureoles Fails to Attend, FGR to Accuse Him of Serious Crime and Illegal Association
In a significant development, former Michoacán Governor Silvano Aureoles Conejo is currently an international fugitive, sought for prosecution in over 190 countries by Interpol, due to his alleged involvement in embezzlement and criminal association related to the construction of seven police stations during his term.
The charges, amounting to 3 thousand 412 million 164 thousand pesos, have been levelled against Aureoles. However, there is no updated public information confirming his arrest or trial status.
A hearing was scheduled for Aureoles at 10:00 AM at the Federal Criminal Justice Center. Despite the scheduled hearing, Aureoles was absent, and Judge Patricia Sánchez Nava inquired about his absence. Aureoles' lawyer, Ángel Echegaray, replied that he did not know the reason for his client's absence.
The hearing was presided over by Judge Sánchez Nava and was attended by Aureoles' lawyer, as well as representatives from the Attorney General's Office, Financial Intelligence Unit, Superior Audit of the Federation, Michoacán's Comptroller's Office, and Michoacán's Attorney General's Office.
Aureoles is accused of embezzlement, fraudulent administration, operations with resources of illicit origin, and criminal association. Four of his former collaborators, including Carlos Maldonado Mendoza, Antonio Bernal Bustamante, Mario Delgado Murillo, and Elizabeth Villegas Pineda, are imprisoned and facing charges for similar offences. Maldonado Mendoza, Bustamante, Delgado Murillo, and Villegas Pineda held positions such as Secretary of Finance, Secretary of Public Security, administrative delegate of the Secretariat of Finance, and administrative delegate of the SSPC, respectively.
Investigations suggest that Aureoles has personnel in charge of his properties, and he has obtained a suspension that stops his detention for an arrest warrant related to embezzlement in the construction of civil guard stations. The Attorney General's Office will charge Aureoles with embezzlement and criminal association on Wednesday.
The director of the Maya Train is currently investigating the case, and Aureoles has sought amparo for various crimes. However, the details on how these affect the charges or current legal proceedings are unclear from the available sources.
