Flu Vaccine Recommendation by Health Minister Drese

Stepping into the chilly season, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Health Minister, Stefanie Drese (SPD), urged the public to get vaccinated against the influenza virus. She made these remarks during her speech in Schwerin on a Friday, advising that November is an optimal time to equip yourself with protection against the impending flu season. Experts predict that influenza viruses will become more active in the forthcoming weeks and months.

This year, the Ministry of Health has brought back the high-dose vaccine for individuals aged 60 and above, a move expected to boost the immune response. Besides the elderly, numerous high-risk groups, including pregnant women, the chronically ill, and medical staff, are recommended for vaccination by the Standing Vaccination Commission.

Observing the decline in flu cases during the COVID-19 restrictions, the last year ended and the beginning of 2023 was marked by a significant rise in flu cases again. Coughs, colds, bronchitis, sore throats, and pneumonia also shot up during this period. Despite COVID-19 still persisting, the current flu season and the escalating activity of influenza viruses necessitate people to seriously consider the vaccination against such diseases.

Participants outside the risk groups are encouraged to get vaccinated in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Drese emphasized, advising individuals to discuss this matter with their family doctor. Both family physicians and health authorities offer flu vaccinations.

It's imperative for individuals to safeguard themselves against seasonal diseases like the flu considering the current situation and escalating activity of influenza viruses. As Health Minister Drese suggests, discussing vaccination with your family doctor is the ideal course of action.
