New Leadership at the German Maritime Search and Rescue Association (DGzRS)

The German Maritime Search and Rescue Association (DGzRS) is undergoing a change in leadership, with Captain Niklas Deeken set to take over from Captain Michael Ippich.

Captain Ippich, who has been a member of the DGzRS management for five years, will be retiring on October 1, 2025. During his tenure, he oversaw numerous significant developments and improvements within the organisation.

One of Captain Ippich's first initiatives as managing director was the decision to build a new training centre in Neustadt i. H. This centre, now under construction, will provide essential training for the DGzRS's volunteers and staff.

In his capacity as the national SAR coordinator for major marine incidents, Captain Ippich reinforced the staff of the maritime emergency command in Cuxhaven. He also ensured the uninterrupted continuation of the search and rescue service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under Captain Ippich's leadership, the DGzRS modernized its in-house shipyard and developed innovative new types of rescue boats with dual jet propulsion for the volunteer stations. A new type of rescue cruiser with a daughter boat was also developed during his tenure.

Captain Ippich's tenure was marked by his response to major news, such as the sinking of the freighter "Verity" in the German Bight in the fall of 2023. He oversaw all SAR measures following this incident.

Captain Ippich's successor, Captain Niklas Deeken, has extensive experience on container ships and bulk carriers worldwide. He began his career with the maritime rescuers in 2013 as an operations operator at Bremen Rescue Radio. Prior to his current role, Captain Deeken was the nautical inspector for the DGzRS for five years.

From October 1, 2025, Captain Deeken will take over the leadership of the rescue service/inspection department of the maritime rescuers on the North and Baltic Seas. He will also support Nicolaus Stadeler in future key operations of the DGzRS.

The DGzRS is managed by a three-member honorary board, which includes Captain Michael Ippich, Captain Niklas Deeken, and Nicolaus Stadeler. Captain Ippich initiated a new incident management system for the DGzRS's maritime rescue coordination center during his time on the board.

The DGzRS developed further innovative rescue boats under Captain Deeken's leadership, ensuring the continued provision of top-quality rescue services on the North and Baltic Seas.
