In a significant development, the Southern Military District Court is currently examining the case of a Crimean couple, Sergei Kozlov and Yevgeniya Samoylova, who are accused of treason, illegal acquisition, storage, transportation of explosive substances, and preparation of a terrorist act.
Residents of Kerch, Kozlov and Samoylova were arrested in April 2024 in Sevastopol. The first hearing of their case took place on September 18 in the Southern Military District Court, where Kozlov fully admitted his guilt.
The couple is alleged to have been collaborating with Ukrainian intelligence, as stated by the prosecution. Kozlov admitted to being recruited by Ukrainian intelligence more than six months ago. Samoylova, however, expressed her disagreement with the aggravating circumstance attributed to her, namely that she acted out of political hatred.
The charges against the couple include treason (Article 275), as well as terrorist acts and illegal manufacture of explosive devices, under various related articles. Samoylova is also charged under Article 205, part 1 of Article 30, and paragraphs "a", "v" of part 2 of Article 205 (preparation for a terrorist act).
If Kozlov's plan had been carried out, nearly 200,000 Crimeans would have been left without water, as he was tasked with disabling a water pumping station. The couple was also ordered to disable railway tracks in Crimea using an explosion and to kill a Russian serviceman in Sevastopol using a bomb. Kozlov was further tasked with learning how to make homemade hand grenades, bombs, and "Molotov cocktails."
In a separate incident, Kozlov set fire to a car with V and Z logos in Kerch, worth over 860,000 rubles, in October 2023.
The case was first heard by the Military Court of the Black Sea Fleet on February 3, 2023. The exact sentence and fines for the couple are yet to be announced by the court.
