Head of Israel's Shin Bet Security Service Steps Down

Israel's top spy, Ronen Bar, the head honcho of the Domestic Intelligence Service (Shin Bet), dropped the bombshell that he's calling it quits on June 15, just six weeks after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to boot him out.

Bar announced his departure in a statement, stating that after 35 years of service, he'll be stepping down to facilitate a smooth transition and a professional handover.

The Shin Bet, a powerhouse when it comes to counter-terrorism investigations, has found itself smack dab in the middle of a heated political brawl. This tussle pits Netanyahu's right-wing coalition government against a diverse ensemble, from members of the security establishment to families of hostages in Gaza.

Netanyahu threw shade on Bar way back on March 16, expressing that he had already lost faith in the spymaster, claiming that trust in the domestic security chief is crucial in times of war.

This move by the Israeli prime minister triggered protests across the nation, with the critics arguing that the government is undermining key state institutions, and jeopardizing the very foundations of Israeli democracy.

The Supreme Court later put the brakes on the government's attempt to fire Bar, citing potential conflicts of interest. Bar alleged that Netanyahu wanted to can him after he refused to engage in spying on Israeli protesters and disrupting the leader's corruption trial.

Netanyahu, in response, countered by accusing Bar of fibbing.

This controversy comes after more than two years of animosity between Netanyahu supporters and elements of the security and defense establishment that was exacerbated by the blame game following the failures that allowed Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack, Israel's most severe security disaster in history and the catalyst for the war in Gaza.

Bar, who played a significant role in ceasefire and hostage release negotiations, had already hinted at his resignation before his term expired, accepting responsibility for Shin Bet's failure to forestall the attack.

However, as of April 2025, Bar is still in office awaiting legal review, with the dust far from settling on this political storm.
