HCD Davos reshapes its roster as star forward exits and rivals eye head coach
HCD Davos is facing a period of change as forward Matej Stránský prepares to leave the club. Despite having a contract until the end of next season, an agreement for his departure is already in place. Meanwhile, the team's head coach, Josh Holden, remains under contract until 2028 after guiding HCD to the semifinals last spring.
This season has been one of the club's strongest in years, raising hopes of a first championship since 2015.
Stránský's exit will allow Davos to bring in a new import player, aligning with the club's long-term plans. Managing director Marc Gianola has confirmed that a transfer fee will be part of the deal. The move comes as HCD seeks to build on its recent success, which has seen no major tactical, technical, or personnel errors so far.
The team's current form has reignited hopes of ending an 11-year title drought. Their last championship came in 2015 under legendary coach Arno Del Curto. Since then, rivals ZSC Lions have dominated, securing eight National League A titles since 2000, including back-to-back wins in 2024 and 2025.
Meanwhile, Zug's interest in head coach Josh Holden has put Davos on alert. Gianola has made it clear that any attempt to poach Holden will be met with strong resistance. Zug's management will have to wait until at least spring 2028 before making any formal approach, as Holden's contract runs until then.
Stránský's departure will free up space for a new signing, strengthening Davos's squad for the upcoming challenges. The club's focus remains on breaking ZSC Lions' dominance and reclaiming the title. With Holden's leadership and a well-structured team, the opportunity for success is now closer than it has been in years.
