HC Taifun clinches historic MHL play-in berth with shootout thriller

HC Taifun has made club history by securing a spot in the Minor Hockey League (MHL) play-in round for the first time. The team defeated Atlant Moscow Region 4–3 in a dramatic shootout on March 14, marking their fifth consecutive victory. This win also keeps them at the top of the Western Conference's Silver Division standings.

The game began with Leonid Zhdanovsky opening the scoring for Taifun in the first period. Demyan Yermak later extended the lead, assisted by Pavel Yumshanov and Rafik Varosyan. Atlant fought back, but Ivan Fomin put Taifun ahead again in the third period, with Roman Strochkin providing the assist.

With the score tied at 3–3, the match went to a shootout. Roman Strochkin and Ivan Fomin both found the net, while goaltender Gleb Peshkov made crucial saves to seal the 4–3 victory. The result ensures Taifun's place in the play-in round, a first for the club. Taifun now prepares for two away games against Sakhalinskie Akuly in Vladivostok on March 21 and 22. The MHL play-in round kicks off on March 25, with potential decisive matches scheduled for March 28 and 29. The winner of the Silver Division will advance to the Gold Division.

The shootout victory marks a milestone for HC Taifun, as no team has previously qualified for the MHL play-in rounds via this method. Their next matches will determine momentum heading into the play-in stage. The club now focuses on maintaining its strong form in the upcoming fixtures.
