HBO's The Last of Us Season 3 casting sparks fierce debate over Lev's role

HBO has announced key casting details for The Last Of Us season three, set to air in 2027. Kyriana Kratter, known for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, will take on the role of Lev, a trans character from the game. The decision has sparked debate among fans, particularly over the choice of a cis actor for the part.

Michelle Mao from Bridgerton will also join the cast as Yara, another central figure in the upcoming season. Both characters, former Seraphites, play a crucial role in Abby's storyline.

The casting of Kratter as Lev has drawn criticism, with some fans arguing that a trans actor should have been chosen instead. Public records show no trans male actors have landed lead roles in major US TV productions over the past five years. HBO confirmed an inclusive casting process, with young actors from diverse backgrounds auditioning for the part.

Bella Ramsey, who stars as Ellie, addressed the backlash by stating that everyone is entitled to their views. She added that the show's production would continue as planned, unaffected by the criticism.

Season two of The Last Of Us also faced challenges, including a 56 per cent drop in viewership for its finale compared to season one. Tensions arose between long-time fans of the game and newer viewers over changes to the original plot.

The third season is rumoured to be the final instalment of HBO's adaptation, wrapping up the storylines introduced in The Last Of Us Part 2.

Season three will focus on Lev and Yara's journey, tying into Abby's arc as the series reaches its conclusion. The casting choices have highlighted ongoing discussions about representation in Hollywood. HBO has yet to announce further details on production timelines or additional cast members.
