HBO Max secures an exclusive licensing agreement with GKIDS, granting access to 20 mature animated and live-action films.

HBO Max, the streaming platform under Warner Bros. Discovery, has announced a new partnership with animation distributor GKIDS. This deal marks the first time several specific titles will be available for streaming in North America.

The partnership will see the North American streaming debuts of a variety of acclaimed GKIDS titles. Some of the highly anticipated films include "Children Who Chase Lost Voices" (dir. Makoto Shinkai), "Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko" (dir. Ayumu Watanabe), "Ghost Cat Anzu" (dir. Yôko Kuno, Nobuhiro Yamashita), and "Lonely Castle in the Mirror" (dir. Keiichi Hara).

Moreover, HBO Max will also host the 4K streaming debut of Makoto Shinkai's critically acclaimed film, "Your Name." Additionally, other titles such as "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" and "Wolf Children" (both dir. Mamoru Hosoda) will also be available in 4K streaming.

The deal, brokered by Liz Bannan Atcheson, VP, Content Acquisition for HBO Max and Eric Beckman, GKIDS' Founder and CEO, reflects HBO Max's commitment to delivering premium films to its subscribers, solidifying its position as a leading destination in the streaming industry.

Dave Jesteadt, President of GKIDS, expressed his excitement about continuing the relationship with HBO Max and bringing this new package to US streaming audiences. He noted that GKIDS focuses on award-winning, genre-defining essential programming, making it a perfect match for the type of outstanding filmmaking that GKIDS champions.

Furthermore, HBO Max and GKIDS have also entered a partnership to stream 20 additional live-action and animated features. Some of these include "Fireworks" (dir. Akiyuki Shinbo, Noboyuki Takeuchi) and "Love & Pop" (dir. Hideaki Anno).

The merger and restructuring of Warner Bros. and Discovery since 2022 have influenced HBO Max's content strategy, but specifics on GKIDS-related releases remain undocumented in the search results. For precise titles and dates, it is recommended to check official announcements from Warner Bros. Discovery or GKIDS, or the HBO Max library updates, as they periodically publish press releases about new acquisitions and streaming debuts.

This partnership is expected to bring a fresh wave of high-quality animation to HBO Max, further cementing its position as a go-to platform for animation enthusiasts.
